European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
