Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
