Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
